A year ago the iPhone Air was the most talked-about iPhone in years. At 5.64mm it's the thinnest iPhone Apple has made, and it feels almost unreal in the hand. It also became the iPhone reviewers argue about most, because to get that thin, Apple gave some things up.
MKBHD titled his review "Beauty is Pain", then gave it his Best Design award for 2025. MacRumors lived with one for a full year and came away mostly happy. Here's what their reviews say, and what that means if you're buying one from us today.

The Feeling
This is the part no spec sheet explains. Pick it up after any other phone and it feels lighter than it should. It slides into a trouser pocket without a bulge, and a jeans pocket doesn't tug. Reviewers keep coming back to this. MacRumors called it pocketable and easy to use one-handed, and after a year most readers who commented said theirs had few scratches.
The 6.5-inch screen reaches 3,000 nits outdoors, so it's easy to read under Lagos sun. With the A19 Pro inside, apps, games and video editing run as fast as on the iPhone 17 Pro. It never feels like a compromise phone in daily use.
Battery: The Honest Part
Apple rates the Air at up to 27 hours of video playback, less than the iPhone 17 and 17 Pro. MKBHD put it plainly: "The battery on the iPhone Air is pretty weak, and there's no getting around that."
After a year, MacRumors found it fine for light to moderate use: messages, calls, some photos, social media. Heavy users, or anyone who spends hours on Google Maps, hotspot or video, will want a power bank. Apple's MagSafe Battery made for the Air takes it to about 40 hours of video. With a 20W charger it reaches 50% in about 30 minutes.
Think about your day before you buy. If you're at a desk near a socket most of the day, it'll be fine. If you're on the road from 7am and power at home is unpredictable, it'll stress you.
eSIM Only, and Why That's Where the Battery Came From
The iPhone Air has no SIM tray. It uses eSIM only, and removing the tray is part of how Apple fit a usable battery into a body this thin. This is the direction iPhones are going. On the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, the eSIM-only versions have bigger batteries than the physical SIM versions and cost less at Ziggatech.

The Camera
There's one camera on the back: a 48MP main camera that also gives you a 2x crop that looks good. For everyday photos, food, people and screenshots of your life, it's excellent. What you lose is the ultra wide for group shots and tight rooms, macro close-ups, and real zoom at an event. MKBHD listed the single camera among the Air's main trade-offs. The 18MP Center Stage front camera is the same good one as on the rest of the lineup.
If you shoot content for work, this isn't your phone. Look at the iPhone 17 Pro or the iPhone 18 Pro.
Other Trade-offs
- One speaker. MKBHD found it thin. Fine for calls and voice notes, not for music with friends.
- The price question. At launch it cost more than the iPhone 17, which has two cameras and a bigger battery. MacRumors said price was the Air's main problem. Reports say the iPhone Air 2 has been pushed back to spring 2027, so this is the Air for the next while.
