There are two versions of the iPhone 18 Pro Max. They look identical, they run the same software, and one of them has no SIM tray at all.
Apple sells the phone eSIM-only in twelve markets: the United States, Canada, Japan, Mexico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands, Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. Units built for the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia keep a physical nano-SIM tray alongside eSIM. Mainland China gets its own configuration again.
Nigeria is not an Apple retail market. Every iPhone in the country arrived from one of those other markets, which means the version you end up holding is decided by whoever sourced it, not by Apple. At Ziggatech the two builds are listed separately and they are ₦100,000 apart.

The part nobody mentions: the eSIM-only phone has the better battery
Apple's headline figure for the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 45 hours of video playback, and 36 hours for the iPhone 18 Pro. Those numbers are quoted for the eSIM-only builds. Removing the SIM tray frees internal volume, and Apple put a larger cell in the space.
So the cheaper version is also the longer-lasting one. That is the opposite of what most buyers assume when they see two prices, and it is worth sitting with before you pay the extra ₦100,000 for a slot.
Does eSIM actually work in Nigeria?
Yes, on all four networks. MTN launched eSIM in July 2020 and 9mobile followed in August the same year. Airtel came after them. Glo was last, starting in March 2025. Whichever line you are on, it can be moved.
The process is a migration, not a new number. You keep your line, your number and your NIN registration, and the profile is written to the phone instead of a piece of plastic.
How to convert your line
- Go to your own network's service centre in person. This is not done over the phone or in an app. Walk into an MTN, Airtel, Glo or 9mobile experience centre.
- Take a valid ID and your NIN. The line has to already be NIN-linked in your name. If the SIM is registered to somebody else, deal with that first or the conversion will not happen.
- Ask for a SIM to eSIM swap, not a new line. The wording matters. A new line gives you a new number you did not want.
- Have the phone with you, charged, on Wi-Fi. The agent issues a QR code you scan on the spot, and the profile downloads before you leave.
- Confirm before you walk out. Make a call and load a page on mobile data while you are still standing there.
MTN and 9mobile have historically done the conversion free of charge. Fees and process change without much notice, so confirm the current terms on your own network's site or at the counter rather than taking a number from any blog, including this one.
How to check which version you are being sold
Before money changes hands:
- Look at the edge of the phone. The simplest check. A tray sits on the left side below the volume buttons on the tray models. On an eSIM-only unit that edge is unbroken.
- Settings, General, About. Scroll to the SIM section. A tray model lists a Physical SIM entry. An eSIM-only model lists only eSIM profiles. The same screen shows the model number, which encodes the region the unit was built for.

When the tray is worth the extra ₦100,000
You swap your line between handsets often. Moving a physical SIM to a spare phone takes ten seconds and a paperclip. Moving an eSIM means another service centre visit, or at best a transfer flow that depends on your network cooperating. If you keep a second phone for work, or hand a line to someone in the family regularly, buy the tray.
You travel to places where local SIMs are sold on the street. Plenty of markets still hand you plastic. An eSIM-only phone means finding a provider that supports eSIM at the airport instead of buying from whoever is nearest.
You want the widest resale audience. Nigeria's used-phone market is still physical SIM first. A tray model sells to everybody. An eSIM-only model sells to buyers who understand what they are buying, which is a smaller room.
When eSIM-only is the better buy
You want the battery. Six hours of rated video playback over the 17 Pro Max, and the tray version does not carry Apple's headline number.
You care about theft. A thief cannot pull an eSIM out and drop the phone off the network. The line stays attached to the device, which keeps Find My useful for longer. This is the argument we made in eSIM vs physical SIM: what changes for you, and it has not got weaker.
You run more than one line. The iPhone 18 Pro Max stores eight or more eSIM profiles and runs two at once. That is more flexibility than a tray plus one eSIM gives you.
You want to spend ₦100,000 less. Which is the whole point.

If you have one line, keep it for years, and your network is MTN or Airtel, take the eSIM-only phone. It is cheaper, it lasts longer on a charge, and it is harder to steal usefully.
If you juggle handsets, travel through SIM-card markets, or expect to resell inside two years, pay the ₦100,000 and take the tray.
