Every big reviewer has now had the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max for a few weeks. Marques Brownlee (MKBHD), The Verge, AppleInsider, GSMArena, Tom's Guide and CNN have all published. They mostly agree on the verdict and disagree about how excited to be.
We read and watched them all so you don't have to. Below is what they found, sorted by what matters to someone buying in Nigeria: battery through a long Lagos day, how the phone copes with heat, the camera, and which version to pick at checkout.

The iPhone 18 Pro is the fastest phone you can buy, it runs cooler than the phones before it, and the Pro Max has the longest battery life of any iPhone ever tested. The new camera with its adjustable aperture is a real tool for people who take photography seriously. For everyone else it's a nice extra. MKBHD calls this an "S year", meaning a refinement rather than a redesign, and The Verge called it "excellent and utterly iterative". If you're on an iPhone 15 Pro or older, this is a big upgrade. If you're on a 17 Pro, you can skip it.

Battery: The Upgrade Everyone Noticed
This is where the reviewers agree most. GSMArena's lab gave the iPhone 18 Pro Max an Active Use score of 19 hours 20 minutes, up from 17:58 on the iPhone 17 Pro Max. AppleInsider got multiple days out of it with lighter use. Apple rates the Pro Max at 45 hours of video playback and the smaller Pro at 36 hours.
Charging got faster too. With a 60W USB-C charger, both phones reach 50% in about 15 minutes, and GSMArena measured a full charge in 55 minutes. When the light goes and you have twenty minutes on a generator or a power bank, that's the number that matters. The older 20W brick in your drawer won't get you there, so budget for a proper charger.
MKBHD raised one complaint here: Apple still doesn't publish battery sizes in mAh, so buyers have to wait for teardowns. The teardowns are now in, and they turn up something useful for anyone buying in Nigeria.
Why the eSIM-only Model Is the Smarter Buy
Every iPhone 18 Pro comes in two builds: one with a physical SIM tray, and one that is eSIM only. Taking out the SIM tray frees up space inside the phone, and Apple fills that space with battery. iFixit's teardown measured:

On the smaller Pro that's about 6% more battery, and on the Pro Max about 3%. At Ziggatech, the eSIM-only version is also ₦100,000 cheaper. You pay less and get more battery. It's the only choice on the order page where that happens.
MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile all support eSIM. You can move your current number across in one visit to your network's service centre with your ID and NIN. The one real trade-off: if you often move your SIM card between phones, a physical tray is faster. If your phone stays your phone, go eSIM. Performance and Heat
The A20 Pro is Apple's first chip made on a 2nm process. Gizmodo measured a 24% jump in single-core speed and 26% in multi-core over last year. Tom's Guide put it about 25% ahead of the Galaxy S26 Ultra in single-core speed. Nothing on the App Store will slow it down.
What matters more in Lagos is heat. Apple added a vapor chamber that it says holds sustained performance up to 40% longer. Gizmodo's Raymond Wong said he doesn't think the phones got hot once, and one reviewer shot 4K 60fps video through a heatwave without it overheating. If your current iPhone gets warm on a hot afternoon or during a long video call, this is the upgrade you'll feel every day.
The Camera: A Real Aperture, With a Catch
The headline feature is a 48MP main camera with physical aperture blades. It can open to f/1.48 for more light, or close down to f/4.0 for more depth and deliberate motion blur, the way a real camera lens does. AppleInsider found night shots improved enough that they sometimes switched Night mode off. PetaPixel found the lens sharpest around f/2.8, with f/1.8 and f/2.8 the most useful settings in practice.
The catch is that you have to want it. CNET found the manual controls awkward to reach one-handed. CNN said the variable aperture isn't an instant reason to upgrade from a 17 Pro Max. In the default mode the iPhone chooses the aperture for you and photos simply look a little better. If you shoot for a living or for your page, you'll use it. If you point and shoot, you'll barely notice it.
The 48MP 4x telephoto carries over. It's excellent, and AppleInsider's reviewer said it was the lens they used most during testing.

Get the Pro Max if battery is your priority, if you watch a lot on your phone, or if you're away from a charger all day. Get the Pro if you want it to fit in one hand and your pocket. At 249g, the Pro Max is 18g heavier than the 17 Pro Max, and AppleInsider and several others listed the weight as a con. Before you pay ₦300,000 more for the bigger one, hold it in store first.
Should You Upgrade?
- From an iPhone 13 Pro, 14 Pro or older: yes. You get a new chip, a much better battery, a better camera and years more iOS updates.
- From an iPhone 15 Pro or 16 Pro: probably. The battery and heat improvements are the ones you'll feel. Engadget said the upgrade makes sense for 16 Pro owners and older.
