Every new iPhone brings a wave of copies, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max is no different. Some are clones: Android phones in an iPhone-shaped body, with a skin designed to look like iOS. Some are older iPhones in a new case, sold as the new model. Some are real iPhone 18 Pro Max units that are stolen, locked, or carrying swapped parts.
From the outside, all three can look convincing. The eight checks below catch them, and you can do most of them in the seller's presence in ten minutes. Run them in this order, and stop at the first one that fails.

Chat on WhatsAppThese are Ziggatech's landed Lagos prices, with import duty and clearing included. Every legitimate seller pays roughly the same to bring the phone into the country. The full price ladder is in our iPhone 18 Pro price guide.
1. The price is far below the market
The phone launched on 18 September 2026. Nobody in Nigeria is selling a genuine, brand-new iPhone 18 Pro Max for much less than it costs to import, because nobody can. A "new" 18 Pro Max far below ₦2.5 million is either not new, not genuine, or not really for sale. This is the check that saves the most people, and you can do it before you even meet the seller.
2. The colour doesn't exist
The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max come in four colours only: Burgundy, Glacier, Black and Silver, on an aluminium frame. Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue were iPhone 17 Pro colours and are discontinued. An "iPhone 18 Pro Max in Cosmic Orange" is a 17 Pro Max, or a clone. See the four real finishes in iPhone 18 colours.
3. The serial number fails Apple's checker
Go to Settings → General → About and find the serial number. Enter it at checkcoverage.apple.com. A genuine phone comes back as an iPhone 18 Pro Max, with a purchase date that makes sense. If Apple doesn't recognise the serial, or names a different model, walk away. Nothing else on this list matters after that.
Do this check on the phone itself, not on the box. Boxes are easy to copy, and a real box can come with a fake phone.
4. The IMEI doesn't match
Dial *#06#. The IMEI on screen should match the one in Settings → General → About and the one on the box. On an eSIM-only unit you'll also see an EID. If any of the numbers disagree, something has been swapped. Photograph this screen before you pay.
5. It doesn't behave like an iPhone
Clones copy how iOS looks, but they can't copy Apple's services. Open the App Store and make sure it's Apple's, not Google Play behind an iPhone-style icon. Try FaceTime and iMessage. Sign in with your own Apple ID, then sign out again. Ask Siri something. A clone fails at least one of these within a minute.
6. The weight is wrong
A genuine iPhone 18 Pro Max weighs 249g, and the iPhone 18 Pro weighs 211g. If you have a kitchen scale, or a store will lend you one, a weight that's well off is a reason to stop.
7. Someone else's account is still on it
Open Settings. There should be no Apple ID at the top, and Find My iPhone must be off. A phone still tied to someone else's account is activation-locked, and you can't fix that after you've paid. Then check the IMEI against a blacklist service such as SICKW to confirm it hasn't been reported lost or stolen. Ziggatech isn't affiliated with SICKW.
8. Parts have been replaced
Settings → General → About → Parts and Service History lists any screen, battery or camera that isn't original or that Apple can't verify. A phone this new should show nothing there. A swapped part on a weeks-old phone usually means it's been dropped, repaired, or rebuilt from other units.
The checks no app can do
A clean serial and IMEI tell you about the phone's record. They don't tell you about water damage, a board that has been opened, or a screen that has been replaced by someone skilled enough to hide it. Ziggatech will inspect a phone you're buying from somebody else at our store in Ikeja: serial and IMEI match, account and lock status, parts history and the hardware itself. Book an inspection on WhatsApp, or read the full guide on how to verify a phone before you buy.
The other option is to skip the risk entirely. Every iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max we sell is brand new and factory sealed, comes with the Apple serial so you can check it yourself, and is filmed with the IMEI on screen before it leaves the building. Choosing between the two builds? Read eSIM or physical SIM.
How Ziggatech sells these
Every unit is factory unlocked and works on MTN, Airtel, Glo and 9mobile, including 5G where the network is live. The IMEI is checked against the GSMA blacklist before anything is listed, and we supply the Apple serial so you can confirm coverage yourself at checkcoverage.apple.com. Every device is filmed with the screen on and the IMEI visible before it leaves the building.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How can I tell if an iPhone 18 Pro Max is fake?
Enter the serial number from Settings, General, About at checkcoverage.apple.com. A genuine phone is recognised by Apple as an iPhone 18 Pro Max. Also confirm the IMEI from *#06# matches Settings and the box, that the colour is Burgundy, Glacier, Black or Silver, and that Apple services like the App Store, FaceTime and iMessage work.
What colours does the real iPhone 18 Pro Max come in?
Four: Burgundy, Glacier, Black and Silver, on an aluminium frame. Cosmic Orange and Deep Blue were iPhone 17 Pro colours. An iPhone 18 Pro Max sold in either of those colours is not an iPhone 18 Pro Max.
How much should a genuine iPhone 18 Pro Max cost in Nigeria?
At Ziggatech in Ikeja, Lagos, a brand-new iPhone 18 Pro Max 256GB is ₦2,550,000 eSIM-only and ₦2,650,000 with a physical SIM tray, with duty and clearing included. A new unit offered far below that should be treated with suspicion.
Can someone check a phone for me before I buy it in Lagos?
Yes. Ziggatech inspects phones bought from other sellers at 1A Bashiru Oweh St, off Medical Road, Ikeja. A technician checks the serial and IMEI, account and lock status, parts history and the hardware. Book on WhatsApp on +234 708 430 3002.
