For seven years, Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold looked like a tall, narrow phone when closed that opened into a small square tablet. With the Galaxy Z Fold 8, Samsung changed the shape. It's now short and wide, like a passport when closed and a small notebook when open, and the reviews have been the warmest a Fold has ever had.
Gizmodo called it "the most fun phone in ages". Android Central called it "the Goldilocks foldable". Engadget scored it 8.9 out of 10. MKBHD's first hands-on said it was more fun than he expected, and he titled his full review two weeks later "Honeymoon's Over". Both reactions are fair, and between them they tell you whether this phone is for you.

The Z Fold 8 is the most comfortable foldable Samsung has made. It's light at 201g, the crease is close to invisible, the 45W charging is finally fast, and the wide inner screen is great for video, reading and spreadsheets. The New Shape: Why Reviewers Liked It
Closed, the Fold 8 has a 5.5-inch cover screen that is wider and shorter than any Fold before. That's the passport feel Engadget described: you can text, check a map and reply to WhatsApp one-handed without opening it. MKBHD made the same point. The squarer shape means no more shuffling the phone around in your hand to reach the keyboard.
Open, you get a 7.6-inch screen in a 4:3 shape, close to an iPad's. That shape is why reviewers kept talking about video. Widescreen content fills more of the screen, so a film on the Fold 8 plays bigger than on a normal phone. MKBHD found split-screen multitasking and reading especially good. Engadget called it "glorious" for landscape gaming.
It's also light. At 201g, the Fold 8 weighs less than an iPhone 18 Pro Max, and it's 4.5mm thin when open.
The Crease Is Nearly Gone
Samsung put a thin titanium layer under the inner screen and added an anti-glare coating. Every major review says the crease is the least visible it has been on a Samsung foldable, and several said they forgot about it during videos. If the crease is what put you off foldables, look again.
Battery and Charging
The Fold 8 has a 4,800 mAh battery. In Engadget's video test using the cover screen it ran for 28 hours 14 minutes, and GSMArena gave it an Active Use score of nearly 14 hours. That covers a full working day with the inner screen open often.
The bigger change is charging. Wired charging rises from 25W to 45W, and GSMArena measured 63% in 30 minutes. That means a useful top-up during a short window of power. Wireless charging goes up to 20W. As with every flagship now, there's no charger in the box.
Where It Falls Short
- No telephoto camera. You get a 50MP main camera and a 50MP ultra wide, and nothing for zoom. Engadget called it "my biggest issue with the phone". The photos are good, but if you shoot events, performances or anything from across a room, you'll notice.
- Apps that don't fit the shape. MKBHD found some apps show black bars or broken buttons on the new screen sizes. The shape is lovely until an app you use every day doesn't support it. Samsung and app developers usually fix this over months, not days.
- More scrolling on the cover screen. The wide cover screen is short, so feeds and chats show fewer lines.
- IP48, not IP68. It survives water, but the "4" means it only keeps out particles bigger than 1mm. Fine dust and sand are the known enemy of any hinge. During harmattan, or if you work somewhere dusty, a case and some care are worth it.

Android Police reviewed the Ultra and said its biggest problem was the regular Fold 8, which is "smaller, lighter, and more enjoyable to use". Choose the Ultra if you need zoom and the longest battery life (it lasted two days in Android Police's testing). Choose the Fold 8 for everything else.
