The M1 launched in November 2020. More than five years later it still runs Apple's newest software. Most Intel MacBooks from 2019 and earlier stopped getting new macOS versions a year or more ago. Here's why, and what it means before you pay for either.

Why Intel MacBooks Aren't as Sustainable as They Look
The updates have stopped
A Mac that can't install the current macOS still works on day one. Over the following years, apps start asking for a newer version, banking and exam portals stop testing on old browsers, and security fixes for the old system end. Apple doesn't announce the date. It simply arrives.
The battery was smaller to begin with
Apple rated the 2020 Intel MacBook Air at up to 11 hours of web browsing. The M1 MacBook Air from the same year is rated at 15 hours, and the M1 MacBook Pro at 17 (Intel Air, M1 Air, M1 Pro). On a used 2019 machine, that smaller figure is also six years older. When NEPA takes light for the afternoon, that gap is the difference between finishing the work and packing up.
No Apple Intelligence
Apple Intelligence needs a Mac with M1 or later, or the MacBook Neo (Apple). No Intel Mac gets it, at any price.
It will sell for less when you're done

Why the M1 Is Still a Powerhouse
- It's on the current software. Every M1 MacBook is on Apple's macOS 27 list, the release no Intel Mac gets.
- The chip is the start of the line Apple still builds on. 8-core CPU (4 performance, 4 efficiency) and 8-core GPU. Office work, Lightroom, 1080p and 4K editing in Final Cut, and development work in Xcode all run well.
- Battery. The M1 MacBook Pro is rated at up to 17 hours of web browsing and 20 hours of video, still more than the new MacBook Neo.
- A fan, on the Pro. It holds full speed through long exports and builds, where fanless laptops slow down to keep cool.
- Apple Intelligence. Writing Tools, notification summaries and Clean Up in Photos all work. Some of the newest Apple Intelligence features in macOS 27 need an M3 or later with at least 12GB of memory.
- Two Thunderbolt / USB 4 ports and a 2560×1600 Retina display.

M1 MacBook Pro or MacBook Neo?
At these prices the two are ₦29,000 apart, so the choice is about how you work, not the budget.
- Buy the M1 MacBook Pro if you edit video, build code or run long exports, want Touch ID, want the longer battery rating, or need 16GB of memory (₦1,261,800).

Who Should Still Buy an Intel Mac?
We sell them, so here is the honest case. If your budget stops at ₦610,000 and the work is browsing, documents and streaming, the Intel MacBook Air does that today. Buy it knowing it won't get macOS 27, and plan to replace it sooner than an M1. If you're choosing between the Intel MacBook Pro at ₦818,800 and the M1 at ₦1,176,800, the extra ₦358,000 buys years of updates the Intel can't get back.
